“Medicine is the study of disease and what causes people to die; chiropractic is the study of health and what causes people to live.” B. J. Palmer (100 years ago)
What could chiropractic care save you from? In a recent study of 83,025 insurance claims between 2012 and 2018, there were 11,114 unique low back pain episodes which involved “escalated” spine care like imaging studies, injection procedures, ER visits, surgery or opioid medication. A comparison was made between those patients who received only one or received 2 to 12 chiropractic visits versus those patients who received no spinal manipulative therapy (SMT).
Here is what they found: with one SMT only, 47% were less likely to receive imaging, 70% less likely to get injections, 92% less likely to go to the ER, 51% less likely to get surgery and 67% less likely to take opioids. The percentages were very similar with the 2 to 12 SMT group, suggesting that the low back pain episode might have been worse with this group.
The point here is that when chiropractic adjustments are included in the treatment of LB pain, even with just one adjustment, there was a significant reduction in the use of additional diagnostics and medical treatment. This saved time, money and reduced pain. So I ask you, why wait when your low back locks up to the point you have to get pain relievers, or worse, surgery, when the studies show that timely chiropractic care can potentially prevent additional methods of treatment.
